What is the Long Tail? The Long Tail is where you may find some of your best traffic. Certain search phrases are seen as more or less competitive based on how often people are searching for them – the most competitive phrases will be found at the top of the search-popularity curve.
While most people would assume that you want to dump all of your SEO into the most popular terms, they wouldn’t necessarily be correct. See – SEO is a lot like fishing, sure, you could go to the local favorite spot that is brimming with fish and even more overrun with fishermen; but you might walk away empty handed because of how many folks are competing for those same fish.
Looking for search terms in the Long Tail is a bit more like taking a couple days to search out some spots that aren’t necessarily over-populated with fish, but are nearly free of other fishermen.
If you make sure your business is using both top and mid-level search terms when going “fishing,” you’ll stay happily fed with customers for years to come!
