Choosing the right keywords remains important to search engine optimization (SEO). But Google and other search engines (yes, there are others) have become much more sophisticated and they are able to deliver results in a way that is much more advanced and useful. Maybe you’ve searched for a film that’s still in theaters. You probably saw some results with showtimes or maybe even ticket prices for that film. How did Google compile all of that information and display it in a way that makes sense? It’s all about rich snippets.
What are rich snippets? They are the result of “behind-the-scenes” code that goes way beyond the basic use of keywords. It’s the result of a schema that organizes keywords in a meaningful way to display more useful search engine results. Without rich snippets, you might look up a product and find a link to a page with product information, prices, etc. But with rich snippets, you might not even have to click on the page to see prices and product specifications. They can be viewed right there in the initial search results.
Let’s take an actual peek at what this might look like. In the image below, you see the original HTML code at the top. And below that, you see what this code looks like after it has been optimized with a schema to turn it into a rich snippet. The schema (microdata) has taken keywords and phrases and made them more understandable for search engines so that results can be displayed in a more useful way.
In the above example, a simple search for a “headache” can now return results that display the essential information about a headache (symptoms, causes, etc.).
Sites that utilize rich snippets generally see a 30% increase in inorganic traffic and a 150% increase in click-through rates (CTR). However, less than 1/3 of websites actually utilize this highly effective SEO strategy!
